A liquid is a nearly incompressible fluid that conforms to the shape of its container but retains a (nearly) constant volume independent of pressure. As such, it is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, gas, and plasma), and is the only state with a definite volume but no fixed shape. A liquid is made up of tiny vibrating particles of matter, such as atoms, held together by intermolecular bonds. Like a gas, a liquid is able to flow and take the shape of a container. Most liquids resist compression, although others can be compressed.

The term may refer to a range of human activity, from handicraft to high-tech, but it is most commonly applied to industrial design, in which raw materials from the primary sector are transformed into finished goods on a large scale. Such goods may be sold to other manufacturers for the production of other more complex products (such as aircraft, household appliances, furniture, sports equipment or automobiles), or distributed via the tertiary industry to end users and consumers (usually through wholesalers, who in turn sell to retailers, who then sell them to individual customers). Manufacturing engineering, or the manufacturing process, are the steps through which raw materials are transformed into a final product.

Plasticity (deformability) during the manufacturing process enables the molding, extrusion, or compression of the material into solid objects of various sizes and shapes, making plastics adaptable to many purposes. Adaptability, light weight, durability, flexibility, and the relatively low cost of production are among the characteristics of plastics leading to their widespread adoption in contemporary society. Typically manufactured by industrial processes, most modern plastics are derived from fossil fuel-based petrochemicals like natural gas or petroleum; however, recent industrial methods have been developed that utilize renewable materials (e.g., derivatives of corn or cotton).The world's first fully synthetic plastic was Bakelite, invented in New York in 1907 by Leo Baekeland, who coined the term plastics. Many chemists have contributed to the materials science of plastics, including Nobel laureate Hermann Staudinger, who has been called "the father of polymer chemistry," and Herman Mark, known as "the father of polymer physics." Dozens of different types of plastics are produced today, such as polyethylene (widely used in product packaging) and polyvinyl chloride (used in construction and pipes).
